John I. Slingerland (March 1, 1804 - October 26, 1861) was a United States Representative from New York. He attended the public schools, engaged in agricultural pursuits, and was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1843 and 1844. He was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, holding office from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1849. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1848 and resumed agricultural pursuits. He was again a member of the State assembly in 1860 and 1861 and died in Slingerlands, New York in 1861; interment was in the Slingerland family mausoleum. Slingerlands is named in honor of his family who were and continue to be residents.[1]
